COSMETOLOGY 1200 HOUR COURSE DEsCRIPTION

Cosmetology: Standard Occupational Classification (SOC 39.5012.00), Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP 12.0401)

The Cosmetology program is comprised of 1200 clock hours, which meets the State of Florida requirements. The program includes extensive instruction and practical experience in cutting, men’s cutting, color, texture, long hair, makeup, skin, nails, customer service, personal appearance and hygiene, personal motivation and development, retail Take Home skills, guest record-keeping, business ethics, as well as sanitation, state laws and regulations, salon-type administration, and job interviewing. This program includes four (4) hours of HIV/AIDS education as well as sanitation education.

Graduates are prepared to become entry-level cosmetologists.

This course is taught in English. Textbooks and course materials are only offered in the English Language.

COSMETOLOGY 1200 HOUR PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Program Hours: 1200 clock hours

The program is divided into pre-clinical classroom instruction and clinical service learning experiences.

  1. Pre-clinical Classroom Instruction: The first 210 hours are devoted to classroom workshops where students learn design principles, technical information, and professional practices.
  2. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: The remaining 990 hours are spent in the clinic classroom area where practical experience is gained.

COSMETOLOGY 1200 HOUR PROGRAM OUTLINE

Your time at Paul Mitchell The School Orlando for the cosmetology program will be divided into six (6) designations:

  1. Core Curriculum: A 210-hour orientation, known as the Core program, instills the basic fundamentals. Students are graded and evaluated using written, oral, and practical testing methods. Students must successfully complete the Core curriculum prior to attending regularly scheduled daily classes in cutting, color, permanent waving, and chemical texture services.
  2. Protégé Learning Experience: Your experience as a Protégé produces a smooth transition from Core student to Adaptive student. You spend 35 hours as a Protégé preparing you for the clinic classroom experience.
  3. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: Your clinic classroom time from 280 to 1200 hours will be guided with individual attention and group learning experiences using mini-classes, monthly worksheets, and periodic evaluations developed specifically for this monitoring progress. This is when you begin experiencing your clinic classroom education on paying clients in the clinic classroom area.
  4. Classroom Learning Experience: Your classroom time from 280 to 1200 hours is divided into six (6) areas: cutting, coloring, texture, makeup, skin, and nails. Each area has an instructor who conducts the different specialty classes each week; Classroom Learning Experiences may also include retail, motivation, self-improvement, professional development, and attendance education which may be conducted by an instructor, non-licensed staff member or guest artist.
  5. Adaptive Curriculum: From 280 to 600 hours, you will enter a new phase of specialty classroom workshops coupled with challenging practical services designed to continue building your skills as a future beauty industry professional.
  6. Creative Curriculum: You will spend your last 600 hours in Paul Mitchell The School Orlando in “high gear” by dressing, acting, and working like a true salon professional. You will use your own artistic and creative abilities, coupled with the assistance of the Learning Leaders, to prepare yourself for your future beauty industry career.

Course Subject Description 

Course CS101 Orientation and Professional Ethics

This course teaches professional guidelines, parking, student kit, what is expected in the next 10 months, and ethics in the beauty industry.

Course CS102 Florida Laws and Regulations

This course teaches the Florida state laws and regulations in the field of cosmetology.

Course CS103 Sanitation and Disinfection (HIV and Aids)

This course teaches the proper ways to sanitize implements . It also reviews the types of bacteria, covers the Milady chapter on sanitation and disinfection, and teaches the causes of HIV and AIDS.
Course SC104 Facials (including Skin Care and Hair Removal) Teaches facial manipulations, including chemical procedure treatments and cosmetics, skin types, and makeup application.
Course CS105 Hair Shaping Teaches the proper way to hold shears, razors, and combs while performing a haircut; how to perform a haircut; guidelines for achieving the desired style; and men’s haircutting.
Course CS106 Scalp Treatment and Hair Care Rinses This course teaches scalp manipulation, hair treatments, and product use and safety.
Course CS107 Shampoos and Rinses This course teaches techniques in shampooing and rinsing the hair, and product use and safety .
Course CS108 Hair Arranging (Styling) Teaches the techniques and basics of pincurls, fingerwaves, thermal hairstyles, and shampoo sets.
Course CS109 Hair Coloring Teaches techniques in hair coloring, the chemistry of hair color, and the classification of hair color.
Course CS110 Chemical Waving and Relaxing / Straightening Teaches perm wrapping techniques, perm chemistry, the different types of perms, and product use and safety It also teaches how to straighten hair which also teaches about the chemicals involved in the process and the proper technique for applying straightener.
Course CS111 Manicuring / Pedicuring / Nail Extension Teaches how to manicure, pedicure, and perform a nail extension; proper sanitation of implements; and how to properly set up the station for a service.
Course CS112 Salon Management Teaches job searching and résumé writing.
Course CS113 Employment Skills This course teaches a student how to write a resume and interviewing skills.
Course CS 114 Additional Training/Professional Development This will give you extra Classroom training

In addition to the state requirements listed above, Paul Mitchell The School Orlando provides training in the areas of communication skills, professional ethics, salesmanship, decorum, record-keeping, and client service record cards.

Course Numbering System Description

The course numbering system is made up of numbers and letters. The CS stands for Cosmetology and B stands for Barbering, the numbers represent the course offered.

COSMETOLOGY 1200 HOUR PROGRAM TESTING AND GRADING PROCEDURE

The following tests and grading procedures are used to assess student learning and mastery of course content in the 1200-hour course:

  1. Academic theory exams: Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on each assigned theory exam. Exams are completed at the conclusion of each online theory module.
  2. Core written and practical skills evaluation: Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on each written exam and each practical skill exam in order to complete the Core program. The exams are an overview of instruction taught during the Core schedule. All Core written and practical skill exams must be passed with a 75% in order to transition to the Clinic Classroom. If students are unable to pass each exam after two attempts, the student may be asked to withdraw from the program and re-enroll in the next available Core class start date.
  3. Final exam 1: This test covers an overview of all related cosmetology subjects (e.g., anatomy, chemistry, etc.). Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on all final exams.
  4. Final exam 2: The written exam covers an overview of all theory instruction, Florida state law, and other items covered on the state cosmetology exam. Students must receive a grade of 75% or higher on all final exams.
  5. Clinic Practical Skill Assessments: Future Professionals progress in practical skill assessments and theory hours will be digitally monitored on a weekly basis by the Future Professional Advisor using the Course Key app. All assigned practical skill assessments must be completed in order to complete the program.
